Are fathers’ and mothers’ food parenting practices differentially associated with children’s eating behaviors?

Little is known about how fathers’ food parenting practices (FPP) are linked with children’s eating behaviors and whether these associations differ from mothers. This study examined between paternal maternal FPP among children aged 5–12 years. A sample of 565 parents (53% fathers) completed: 1) the item bank, which measured 11 constructs three domains (control, autonomy promotion, structure) 2) Children’s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ), to assess four (emotional overeating, responsiveness, satiety responsiveness fussiness). Multivariable linear regressions evaluated CEBQ constructs, models were run separately for fathers Similarities emerged mothers: use restriction weight positively associated emotional overeating responsiveness; accommodate child around involve negatively associated, respectively, fussiness; 3) child, or coercive controlling practices, was overeating. Differences mothers in terms a greater number predictive behaviors. Although similarities exist fathers, findings suggest that likely exert unique influence on their stress need interventions account role each parent plays promoting healthy habits.
